1.1. Overview of AI in the Legal Industry
Brief history of AI in law
Current landscape of AI tools for legal professionals
You've heard all about artificial intelligence, you can't help but hear it. It's in the news everywhere and I bet you your friends are asking you about it. Your question as an attorney, as someone working in the legal field is, how does this impact me? Do I need to know about it? Is this relevant to my practice? And really should I be just so afraid that I don't even wanna touch it?
One of the things that we want to talk about is, first of all, what is this Chat GPT, this artificial intelligence from a 30,000 foot view. It's very simple. It is an extraordinarily large database of information into which an enormous amount of information is placed. And what that's called then is a large language model, an LLM. And this is what you hear about when you're talking about AI.
They call it general AI or generative AI. But the point is, is that you can actually interact with it. You can ask it questions like you can with Google, but it will actually come up with its own answers rather than just direct you to websites. Moreover, and this is the really revolutionary part, is once it gives you an answer or a response, you can then iterate with it, modifying your questions and interpretations with it and it will respond to you in kind. So essentially it's as if you're having a conversation with someone who knows something that can provide you information. So it's really much more interactive and really exciting for the legal community.
